What happens when speed doubles?

-Thinking distance doubles

-Kinetic energy quadruples

-Braking distance quadruples

What affects thinking distance?

-Distractions to driver

-Tiredness

-Drugs/alcohol

-Fog/ poor visibility

-Speed

What affects braking distance?

-Bald tyres

-Wet roads

-Worn brake pads

-Speed

What is work done?

When a force moves
What happens when mass doubles?

Kenetic energy doubles

What happens when velocity doubles?

Kinetic energy quadruples

What affects fuel consumption?

-Road conditions

-Windows open

-Size of a car

-Weight

-How long you are stationary

What are the advantages of electric cars?

-Better for local environment

-Lower emmisions

-Don't have to pay for fuels

-Less noise pollution

What are the disadvantages of electric cars?

-Power stations may still produce greenhouse gases

-Cars are expensive to buy

-Takes a while to charge

-Would not be able to travel a long way as it is only lasts 6-8 hours

How does a seatbelt work to minimise injury?

It stretches so that some of the kinetic energy is converted to elastically energy.

How does a crumple zone reduce injury's?
It absorbs some of the cars energy by changing shape or crumpling.
How does an air bag reduce injury's?

It absorbs KE by squashing up around the passenger.
What do all safety features do?

-Change shape

-Absorb energy

-Reduce injury

-Reduce momentum to zero more slowly to reduce the force on the cars occupant.

Name some features that prevent a crash?

-ABS brakes

-Anti-lock brakes

-Traction control

-Cruise control

-Electric windows

-Paddle shift

Name some features that protect the occupants if a crash occurs?

-Air bag

-Crumple zone

-Seatbelts

How does paddle shift work?

It allows driver to operate gears, lights, stereo and wipers without taking hands of steering wheel or eyes of the road.

How does ABS brakes work?

It gives a vehicle stability and maintains steering when breaking hard or going into a skid. Works by the driver applying hard continuous pressure which activates the anti lock brakes which then work by automatically pumping on and off to avoid skidding.

How does traction control work?

It stops the wheels from spinning when accelerating quickly. Provides maximum grip and stability.

How do you test the safety features on a car

-Computer simulations

-Testing with models/dummies

How does an average speed camera work?

It recognises number plates to find time over a measured distance

How does a speed camera work?

By working out speed using the lines on the road to give distance and the time between the flashes.
