Compare:
1. Epilepsy
2. Seizure
3. Convulsion
1. Epilepsy- RECURRANCE of seisures with or without convulsions; collection of different types of seizures; sudden onset and spontaneous resolution

2. Seizure- EPISODIC, BRIEF, INVOLUNTARY; excess discharge of neurons, measured by EEG; could be due to alcohol, metaboic disturbances, fever, etc

3. Convulsion- VIOLENT INVOLUNTARY CONTRACTION or series of contractions of VOLUNTARY muscles
What is the area of increased discharge during a seizure called?
FOCUS of the seizure

it may remain localized or spread to the entire brain
Mechanism of Seizure
Normal: ASYNCHRONOUS electrical charges firing sporadically

Seizure: SYNCHRONOUS, sudden, excessive electrical discharge
Describe a Simple Partial Seizure
NO loss of consciousness

Focal, Local Seizure

convulsions confired to a single limb or muscle group
Describe a Complex Partial Seizure
AKA Psychomotor or Temporal Lobe Seizure

DISTURBANCE of consciousness
(most difficult to treat)

usually starts with BLANK STARE, followed by CHEWING, followed by RANDOM ACTIVITY

may PICK AT CLOTHING, pick up objects, or try to take clothes off; may run appear afraid

SAME PATTERN of actions usually occur with each seizure

NO MEMORY of what happened during seizure period
Describe a Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure
Generealized Tonic Clonic Seizure (aka Gand Mal)

sudden CRY, FALL , RIGIDITY followed by MUSCLE JERKS, shallow breathing, or temporarily suspended BREATHING, bluish skin, possible LOSS OF BLADDER/ BOWEL CONTROL

lasts a COUPLE OF MINUTES
Describe Absense Seizure
Absense Seizure (aka Petit Mal)

BLANK STARE, beginning and ending abruptly, lasting only few seconds, most common in CHILDREN, rapid blinking, some CHEWING movements

may result in LEARNING DIFFICULTIES if not treated
Describe Atonic Seizures
Atonic Seizure (aka Drop Attacks)

sudden COLLAPSES AND FALLS regains consciousness after 10 seconds to a minute and can stand and walk again
Describe Myoclonic Seizures
Myoclonic Seizures

Sudden brief, massive MUSCLE JERKS that may involve the whole body or parts of the body; may SPILL what they are holding or FALL OFF CHAIR
Describe Infantile Spasms
Infantile Spasms (aka West Syndrome)

clusters of QUICK, SUDDEN movements that start between 3 MONTHS AND 2 YEARS
