What is energy flow?

Thermal energy flows from warmer bodies to a cold body. When the heat flows away from the body the temperature decreases.

What is the equation for energy transferred?

energy transferred = mass x specific heat x temperature change

What is energy measured in?

Joules

What is specific heat capacity?

The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg to 1 oC

What is specific latent heat?

The energy needed to melt or boil 1 kg of the material.

What happens to the temperature when the material chances state?

The temperature stays the same.

For a substance to change state what does the energy need to do?

The energy needs to break the bonds that hold the molecules together. This is why there is no temperature change when a substance changes state.

What is the equation for the energy transferred by specific latent heat?

energy transferred = mass x specific latent heat

How does double glazing work?

There is a gap in between two glass planes that has a vacuum in between. This stops the air particles transferring energy over by conduction due to no particles to pass it on to.

What does loft insulation prevent?

The loss of energy through conduction and convection.

How does loft insulation work?

Warm in air in house rises

Energy is transferred through the ceiling by conduction.

Warm air gets trapped in insulation.

Both sides of the ceiling are the same temperature so no energy transferred.
