Gray matter
Part of the CNS that is composed of cell bodies and unmyelinated fibers.
lumbar puncture
A procedure in which a hollow needle is inserted into the subarachnoid space, between L3 & L4, about the top level of the hip bone.
spinal cord
Continuation of the brain stem. Tubelike structure within the spinal cavity, thickness of thumb. About 17 inches long. Starts at foramen magnum of the occipital bone to the level of the first lumbar vertebra (L1), just below the bottom rib.
afferent neuron
Nerve impulse carried from the receptor to the spinal cord. Also called a sensory neuron.
efferent neuron
In response to nerve impulse, muscles contract & move. Also called a motor neuron.
reflex arc
The nerve pathway involved in a reflex.
integrating center
The gray matter of the spinal cord contains interneurons that determine the motor response to the sensory output.
dermatome
Area of body supplied by a spinal nerve. Each dorsal root of a spinal nerve innervates a particular area of skin.
mixed nerves
All spinal nerves contain contain sensory & spinal nerves.
nerve tracts
Group of neurons that share a common function within the CNS; may be ascending (sensory) or descending (motor).
