High Priest during Samuel's early life. Dies when he hears the ark had been captured by the Philistines. Failure to discipline his sons leads to removal of his familiy.

Esther

Jewish girl who became queen of Persia under very dubious circumstances. Reluctantly saved the Jews.

Ezra

Led a return to Judah in the 450s. Spiritual reform was his emphasis.

Gedaliah

Appointed governor of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar after destruction of Jerusalem. Assassinated.

Gehazi

Elisha's attendant whose greed brought him Naaman's leprosy.

Wicked Persian official who plotted Jews' destruction, thwarted by Esther.

Priest at time of Josiah's great reform. Found the book of the Law.

Hiram

Phoenician king, allied with David and Solomon. Helped with building and commerce

Hophni

One of Eli's evil sons; a naughty priest.

Hoshea

Last king of Israel (N). Samaria destroyed.

A rare woman prophets at time of Josiah and Jeremiah.

Ichabod

"The glory has departed." The son of Phinehas born at time the ark was captured.

High priest who led return to Judah with Zerubbabel.

Candidate for best king of Judah. Great reforms. Died early at Megiddo.

Jotham

Basically good king. Regent because of his father's leprosy.

Kish

The father of Saul.

Manasseh

Candidate for worst king of Judah. Idolatry and bloodshed. May have killed Isaiah. Brief repentance after captivity.

Menaham

One of the usurpers in the North. Dynasty V. Paid off Assyria.

Mephibosheth

Jonathan's son, crippled from accident when infant. He was the only one left from Saul's house. David showed him kindness for Jonathan's sake.

King of Babylon, Hezekiah's ally in the failed revolt.

Moabite king who revolted against Israel and sacrificed his own son. Left a famous inscription.

Faithful prophet against Ahab. Predicted his death.

Younger daughter of Saul, wife of David. Lost his respect by her disrespect of this faith and zeal.

Esther's guardian. Motivated her to save the Jews.

Nadab

The one successor of Jeroboam I. Bad.

Nathan

Faithful prophet of David's time. Warned against David's sin. Delivered promise of the covenant.

King of Babylon who destroyed Jerusalem.

Neco

Pharaoh who killed Josiah at Megiddo and deported Jehoahaz.

Nehemiah

Persian-appointed governor of Judah. Rebuild walls of Jerusalem.

Obadiah

"A devout believer in the LORD." He hid 100 prophets in two caves and supplied them with food and water in order to protect them from Jezebel.
