Define Osmosis (using water). |
The movement of water molecules from a region of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration through partially permeable membranes. |
What is a semi-permeable membrane? (also called partially or selectively permeable) |
A membrane that allows certain particles in but not others. i.e: water and not dirt. |
Where does Osmosis happen in plants? |
Root and root tips. |
How does water move through the root cells (not including the xylem) |
Osmosis |
What part of the cell holds water? |
Vacuole |
What happens to the cells' shape after Osmosis? |
They become turgid or stiff. |
Why is it important that the cells must become turgid through Osmosis? |
So the plant can be held upright. |
