Water Potential

A measure of the concentration of water molecules that are 'free' to diffuse.

Adding solutes to water, lowers the concentration of 'free' water and hence lowers water potential.

Osmosis

Osmosis is diffusion of water from regions of high water potential to a region of low water potential down the water potential gradient through a partially permeable membrane

Water Potential

Highest Water Potential - Pure Water - No Solute dissolved

Water Potential

Lower Water Potential (-10kPa) - Dilute Solution - Small amount of solute dissolved

Water Potential

Very low water potential (-500kPa) - Concentrated Solution - Large amount of solute dissolved.
