Define Osmosis.

The diffusion of water from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential.

What is water potential?

The likelihood of water molecules to diffuse out of or into a solution.

Can large solute molecules diffuse through easily?

No, but water can.

What water potential does pure water have?

0.

How does adding a solute to water affect the water potential?

Lowers the water potential, it is always negative.

What does a more negative water potential mean?

It has a stronger concentration of solutes in the water.

What does isotonic mean?

A solution with the same concentration as another. There is no net movement.

What is a hypotonic solution?

A solution with higher potential than the cell.

What is a hypertonic solution?

A solution with lower water potential than inside the cell.

Name 3 factors which affect osmosis.

Water potential gradient - higher = faster rate.

Thickness of exchange surface - thinner = faster.

Surface area - larger SA = faster rate.

Is osmosis active or passive?

Passive.
