Structure

The structure of the respiratory epithelium changes along the respiratory tract
The structure of the respiratory epithelium changes along the respiratory tract

Nasal cavity

Nasal cavity and the superior portion of the pharynx are made up of a respiratory mucosa (mucos membrane) with mucous cells and the mucous escalator formed by the cilia of ciliated simple columnar epithelial cells

Inferior portions of the pharynx (back of the throat)

are stratified squamous epithelium protecting the epithelium from abrasion and chemical attack.

The conducting portion

The conduction portion of the lower respiratory tract is made of the same respiratory mucosa

The finer bronchioles

consists of cuboidal epithelium

The alveoli provide a large surface area

The alveoli provide a large surface area and consist of a delicate simple squamous epithelium for gas exchange. The alveoli are covered by the extensive capillary network of the pulmonary circulation. here the distance between the air and the blood in adjacent capillaries is less than 1um. The site of gas exchange is knows as the respiratory membrane
