Pathological materialism: we frequently judge success on income level, number of toys, etc.; makes the conflict larger; allowed people to innovate and find new ways to get to this success

need a certain set of skills to become part of crime group- may get in through conflict subculture
if you're in the right place at the right time and you have the right set of skills you may become part of the criminal group

there are means by which community controls the actions of its members.
values and behaviors are set by group and socially controlled.
people commit crimes because they are not connected to community and not influenced by social norms.

waves of immigrants modeled this behavior and used them in criminal activity.
