What is the functions of the human digestion system?

Mouth

Oesophagus

Liver

Stomach

Small instestine

Large intestine

Pancreas

Rectum

Mouth -

Digestion starts here where the teeth chew and mix the food with saliva. Saliva contains an enzyme (called amylase) that breaks down carbs.

Oesophagus -

Food pipe. Links the mouth to the stomach.

Liver -

The liver makes bile. Which breaks fats into tiny droplets (emulsification). It's also alkaline to give the right pH for the enzymes in the small intestine.

Stomach -

Here the food mixes with protease enzymes which digest proteins. The stomach contains muscular tissue to move and churn up food .

Large intestine -

Here water is absorbed - so we don't all shrivel up.

Small intestine -

This produces more enzymes to further digest proteins, carbs and fats. Food is also absorbed through the gut wall into the blood, which then takes it around the body to wherever it's needed.

Pancreas -

PROTease digest PROTein.

CARBOHYDRAse digests CARBOHYDRAtes.

LIPase digests LIPids.

Rectum -

Food usually contains some materials that we can't digest. Here the digestion story ends when it plops out of the anus.
