What are IUPAC rules?
Determine the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms and use this as the parent name.
What is the general formula for alkanes?
C`nH`2n+2.
What is the formula for single bonds of carbon chains?
C`nH`2n.
What is the difference between alkene and alkanes?
The general formula for alkenes is C`nH`2n. Alkenes have a double bond between two adjacent carbon atoms and therefore have two fewer hydrogen atoms than alkanes.
What is the difference between cis- and trans-?
Cis alkenes have the larger substituents on the same side of the double bond.
Trans alkenes have the larger substituents on the opposite sides. |
What is the difference between E and Z?
E refers to the opposite side, trans, and Z refers to the same side, cis. (Page 159)
What does conjugated mean?
When the double bonds are separated by a single bond the structure is referred to as conjugated.
What do the prefixes ortho, para, and meta mean?
Ortho - 1,2
Meta - 1,3 Para - 1,4 |
What is the difference between E and Z?
