Functional Group

An atom or a group of atoms with characteristic chemical and physical properties.

It is the reactive part of the molecule.

Hydrocarbons

Compounds made up of only the elements carbon and hydrogen.

They may be aliphatic or aromatic.

Aliphatic Hydrocarbons

A compound or portion of a compound made up of C-C bonds but not aromatic bonds.

Can be divided into three subgroups: Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes

Alkanes

Have only C-C bonds and no functional group.

Ethane, CH3CH3, is a simple form.

Alkenes

Have a C-C double bond as a functional group.

Ethylene, CH2CH2, is a simple form.

Alkynes

Have a C-C triple bond as a functional group.

Acetylene, HCCH, is a simple form.
