What defines a good leaving group? (GLG)
LG = Conjugate base of a strong acid or small neutral molecule

ex. primary F (slow), primary Cl (not fast), primary Br (fast), primary I (very fast)
Is hydroxide (OH) ever a leaving group?
Usually no!!! If it is, it must be combined with pyridine/TsCl first to remove the OH, then with ethanol and the reactant to form the product.
Sn2 Summary
Most rapid at Primary, not so good at secondary, NOT AT ALL at tertiary
Solvent - normal (ethanol/water)
Dipolar, aprotic are best
Nucleophiles vary, neg better than neutral - periodic trends
Leaving groups - best are conj bases of strong acids
lewis acid
a substance that accepts an electron pair
lewis base
a substance that donates an electron pair
Sn2 reaction means what so far as configuration?
sn2 means a change in configuration
