Scientific Management Theory
Micro level, looks at individuals within the org., it's a mechanistic theory of org. behavior, workers are easily replaceable, not interchangeable, and there are developed time operations.
Classical Management Theory
Macro level, looking at the whole organization, the broad picture, it's a mechanistic theory of org. design, and would "routenize" administration the way machines routenize production.
Question 1A - How is it used as a tool? - First CONCEPT (3 Reasons)
1. Gives MGR's the ability to give orders.
2. MGR's use it to gain compliance.
3. Use to coordinate actions - Comm. is seen as a technical problem, not a social concern.
Question 1B - Second and Third CONCEPTS
There is a hierarchy, and a determined pathway. There is codification using linguistic codes, rules and regulations manuals, and programmed interpersonal interactions.
Question 1C - CONDITIONS
Must have:

2. Compliant Labor Force
3. Straight Forward Task
4. Stable Environment
Org. as Organisms
Workers need to survive, so they adapt to their environment. Comm. is how they adapt, with meetings all the time asking how they feel with a strong emphasis on interpersonal skills. Asking the workers what they think about issues, and engaging in bottom up comm.
Contingency Theory
Organizational adaptation, some influence int he environment to which an organization has to adapt.
Population Ecology Theory
Environmental selection, looking at the reasons why entire populations of organizations dissapear. Inertial pressures. The .Com downfall, typewriter.
Org's. As Cultures
Beliefs that members of the organization share. Org's use symbols to create culture within the organization and create communicative behaviors. Examples are decorating cubes, symbolic activities, dress codes, friday beer bash. Members of the org. bring the culture to it and managers control the culture and it's progression, positive or negative.

2 Aspects of Org's. As Political Systems
Ideology - A set of ideas that arise from a given set of material interests, or more broadly from a definite class or group.

Hegemony - Acceptance of an ideology as normal reality or common sense by those in practice subordinated by it.

The idea that we must do to survive. & Co-optation, aligning the interests of those in power with those whow have less power.
