Purpose of Nahum
To detail God's judgment on the Assyrian city of Nineveh. A century after her repentance chronicled in the book of Jonah. Nineveh returned to her idolatry, pride and violence, thus incurring the judgment of God. As Nahum prophesied, Nineveh was destroyed c 612 B.C.

Purpose of Haggai

Purpose of Zechariah

To call the Jews who returned from the exile to prepare the temple for the Messiah. His tone differs from Haggai in that Zechariah's is more encouraging and focuses on future blessings when the Messiah would inhabit the temple. Zechariah is the most messianic and most eschatalogical in the OT.

Repent

Purpose of Malachi

To call the Jews who returned from exile to repentance over their complacency toward God's faithful love and His Law, evidenced by their mixed marriages, withholding tithes and social injustice. Yet Malachi also reminds them that God's covenant promises remain true.

Author & Date of Malachi

Malachi. Ministered to post-exilic Jews c. 437-417 BC, after the temple had already been rebuilt (516 BC). Malachi is the final prophet before 400 years of silence until the start of the ministry of John the Baptist, who came preaching repentance, "for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matt 3:2).
