Boney structure of the Orbit

Lacrimal Gland

In the superolateral Orbit. Just behind the orbital Margin. Tears are produced hear and stream across the surface of the eye.

Lacrimal Papilla

At the medial Junction of the upper and lower eyelids, tears train into the papilla and are carried through the Lacrimal canaliculi to the lacrimal sac.

Levator Palpebrae

Origin- Common tendinous Ring


Insertion- Broad app. into upper eyelid.


Innervation- Superior Division of CNIII


Function- Voluntary elevator of the upper eyelid.



Superior Tarsal Muscle

Arises from Levator Palpebrae Superioris.


Innervation- Symps. from ICA


Function- Involuntary of Upper eyelid.

What are the three axes the eyeball moves around?

Sagittal- Elevation and Depression


Transverse- Abduction and Adduction


Anteroposterior- Intorsion and Extorsion

Lateral Rectus

Innvervation- CN VI, Abducent. Primary abductor

Medial Rectus

Inferior division of CNIII, Primary adductor.

Superior Rectus

Superior division of CNIII, Elevator, Adductor, and Intorsion.

Inferior Rectus

Inferior Division of CNIII, depressor, adductor, extorsion.

Superior Oblique

Cn IV ( trochlear). Runs of a pulley. depressor, abductor and intorsion.

Inferior Oblique

Inferior division of CN III. Elevator, abductor, Extorsion

Horners Syndrome

Interruption of Sympathetics to the eye results in ptosis( drop of eyelid), miosis(Pupil constriction), an hydrosis ( Loss of sweating), and flushing of the face.

Test of Extra Ocular Muscles

Trace the H. In right eye. Abduct. Look up to test Superior Rectus. Look down to test inferior Rectus.




Adduct. Look up to test inferior oblique and look down to test inferior oblique.
