Periapical Films:
ALL pariapical films must have 2mm bone beyond the apises of teeth.
Central Film:)

Lateral Film
Size 1 only
• Maxillary ONLY
• Contact between Lateral and Central CENTERED AND OPEN
Canine Film:
Size 1 or 2

• Contact between Canine and Lateral is CENTERED AND OPEN
Premolar Film:
Size 2
• Maxillary and Mandibular
• Anterior film edge in MIDDLE of Canine OR MORE ANTERIOR
• Contact between 1st and 2nd Premolar is CENTERED AND OPEN
Molar Film:

• Maxillary and Mandibular
• Anterior edge of film in MIDDLE of second premolar
° IF third molar is present, the film may be placed MORE DISTAL to include all of the third molar.

Both Vertical and Horizontal
Premolar Film:
• Anterior edge of film is MIDDLE OF MOST ANTERIOR CANINE (usually mandibular)
• Contact between maxillary 1st and 2nd premolar is OPEN
Molar Film
• Anterior edge of film in MIDDLE OF MOST ANTERIOR PREMOLAR
° IF third molars are present, film edge may be placed more distal to include all of the third molar
• Contact between 1st and 2nd molars is OPEN

* If taking vertical bitewings on a patient with 3rd molars, it is most likely you will need to take a 3rd molar bitewing to be able to cover all contacts adequately.
