Between connective tissue and epithelium. Pas +ve hence contains neutral mucopolysaccharides . Two layers, lamina lucida - clear, densa - dark. Lucida- type 4 collagen, antibody kf1 and laminin and bullous pemphigoid antigen. Densa - type 4 collagen, coated with heparin sulfate. Anchoring fibrils- type 7 collagen, and collagen 1 and 2. |

Lamina propria |
Two layers, papillary and reticular. Papillary - loose CT. Nerves. Under epithelial ridges. Absent in alveolar mucosa. Reticular, always present. Has argyrophilic fibres. |

Loose CT. From lamina propria to bone or muscle. Collagen and elastic fibres. Absent in hard palate, gingiva. |
