Importance of short term scheduling
Faster movement of goods which means better use of assets and lower costs. This new capacity as a result of faster throughput. More dependent deliveries
Scheduling criteria
Minimize completion time, maximize utilization of facilities, minimize WIP, minimize customer waiting time
Scheduling issues
Deals with timing of operations, task is the allocation and prioritization of demand. For backwards scheduling, finite or infinite loading criteria for sequencing jobs
Forward scheduling
Start as soon as requirements are known, Produces a feasible schedule though due date may not be known. Results in buildup of WIP
Backward scheduling
Begins with today and schedules from final operation first. If we want to finish by a certain date when should we start. May not have the resources available
Finite and infinite loading
Signing jobs to workstations, finite loading assigns work up to the capacity of the workstation, All work it's done due dates any pushback. Infinite loading does not consider capacity, all due dates are met capacity maybe readjusted
Process focus facilities or job shops
Scheduling to customer orders, schedules are often due date focused
Repetitive facilities or assembly lines
Schedule module production and product assembly based on frequent forecast, finite loading with focus on generating for looking schedule. JIT techniques are used to schedule components that feed assembly-line
Product focused facilities or continuous
High-volume very limited variety. Finite loading with a focus on generating a forward-looking schedule that can meet unknown set up and run times for the limited range of products
Scheduling process focused facility
Scheduling coming orders without violating capacity constraints, check availability of tools materials, Established due dates for each job and check progress check WIP, provide feedback, provide work efficiency statistics and monitor times
Planning profiles
Required for both automated and manual short-term scheduling
Planning files
Item master file contains information about each component. Routing file indicates each components flowed through the workshop. Work Center masterfile contains information about the center
Control files
Tracking the actual progress made against the plan
Loading job objectives
Assigned jobs so that cause, idle time, or completion time are minimized
Two forms of loading
Capacity oriented and assigning specific jobs to work centers
Input output control
identifies overloading in under loading conditions, prompts managerial actions to resolve scheduling problems
What is S PT and what are the good things and bad
Shortest processing time first. Does well on minimizing full-time and number of jobs in the system. Moves long jobs to the End which made to satisfy customer
FCFS problems
Does not do well but it's perceived fair to customers
EDD one is it and good feature
Earliest due date first. Minimizes maximum lateness
Critical ratio
In next number from by dividing the time remaining until the due date by the work time remaining on the job. Low critical ratios are scheduled before high critical ratios
