Blog
A Blog is a web log or online journal. A blog provides a forum for people to write communications that can be viewed across the entire organization or Internet. After a blog entry is posted, the content can be commented on and discussed on the blog entry page. Blogs are prevalent throughout modern society and SharePoint provides the ability to get a blog up and running in a matter of minutes.
Cloud
A very broad marketing term and buzzword that refers to access software over the Internet.
Discussion Board
A discussion board allows for online discussion throughout the organization. A discussion board provides a forum for people to post questions and replies that can be viewed throughout the organization.
Excel Services
Excel Services is a feature of SharePoint that allows Excel documents to be accessed through a SharePoint site and thus through a web browser.
Exchange
Exchange is Microsoft's e-mail server designed to handle the heavy lifting of managing and routing e-mails. In addition, Exchange handles functionality, such as contacts, calendars, and tasks. Users generally use an e-mail client such as Outlook to connect to Exchange.
Exchange Online
Exchange Online is the term for Microsoft's cloud version of Exchange. The Online portion refers to the fact that you access your Exchange instance over the Internet whild you are online. Microsoft installs Exchange on servers running in their data centers, and you connect to it and use it over the Internet.
Extranet
An extranet is a computer network that is accessible by people outside your organization's network but is not accessible by the public at large.
InfoPath
An application designed to create nifty and userful forms that are used to collect data from people. InfoPath is being deprecated and isn't part of Office 2016.
Intranet
An intranet is a computer network that is private and only meant for your organization.
JavaScript
JavaScript is a scripting language that is designed for the web. You can use JavaScript to interact with a web page programmatically. Since JavaScript is run from the client web browser, you can create a rich interactive experience without the web browser having to communicate with the server, resulting in the page flickering and reloading with each interaction.
Master Page
A master page is a template that is responsible for the layout of the components that are found on every content page. For example, you wouldn't want to have to add navigational components to every single new page you create. If you did, and ever needed to make a change, you must change every single page. Keeping everything in sync would be a nightmare. Using a master page, you would only create the navigational components once and then all the other pages would reference this master page for the common components.
Microsoft Business Intelligence
Business Intelligence means many different things to many different people. The generally agreed upon definition of Business Intelligence involves using computer software to get a handle on the mountains of data that flow from modern business. The data is turned into information that is used to run a business in an intelligent fashion. Microsoft Business Intelligence refers to the Microsoft tools and technologies that fall into the Business Intelligence space.
Microsoft .NET
The Microsoft .NET technology consists of programming languages and libraries designed to increase developer productivity and compatibility across Microsoft client and server computers.
Microsoft Office
Office is the nearly ubiquitous productivity suite used by information workers around the world. The Office product contains such applications as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Access, and Skype for Business.
Office 365
The Microsoft product that contains SharePoint, Exchange, and Skype for Business (among others; Microsoft is adding more services all the time); all installed and managed in Microsoft's data centers and accessed over the Internet (also called over the cloud or in the cloud).
Outlook with Business Contact Manager
An application used for e-mail, contacts, and calendaring, including scheduling meetings, meeting rooms, and other resources.
PowerShell
PowerShell is a shell interface similar to DOS. Products such as SharePoint have PowerShell instructions, called cmdlets, which let you build scripts to interact with the product. For example, you might develop a series of PowerShell cmdlets that increases the specific configuration information of your SharePoint site.
Report
A report is nothing more than information describing the status of some topic. A report can be developed by using a number of technologies, such as Report Builder, Dashboard Designer, Excel, or even SharePoint web parts.
SharePoint
SharePoint is a term used to describe a technology from Microsoft. SharePoint has become the leader in communication, collaboration, and content management. SharePoint continues to evolve as functionality is folded into the product and additional features are developed. SharePoint 2016 is the most current release of the SharePoint product.
SharePoint Designer
SharePoint designer is a software application that is used for SharePoint development. The content contained in a SharePoint application lives in a SQL Server database. SharePoint Designer provides a window into the SharePoint database that allows for customization and development. SharePoint Designer 2013 is the most recent version, and Microsoft doesn't seem to have plans to update it.
SharePoint Document Library
A Document Library is a mechanism to store content within SharePoint. A Document Library provides functionality for content management such as checkin and checkout, versioning, security, and workflow. An instance of a Document Library is called an app.
SharePoint List
A SharePoint List is simply a list of data. Much like you have a grocery list, a SharePoint List stores data in columns and rows. An instance of a SharePoint List is called an app.
SharePoint MySites
The My Sites functionality of SharePoint offers every user her own SharePoint site.

A SharePoint Site Collection is a top-level site that contains other subsites. The difference between a Site Collection and a Site is that a Site Collection contains separate security and is isolated from other Site Collections. A Site, on the other hand, is contained by a top-level Site Collection and shares security and other aspects with other Sites within the same Site Collection.
SharePoint Workflow
A SharePoint Workflow is a set of tasks and actions that can be associated with a list, library, or site. For example, you might have a workflow to request feedback on new documents. When a new document is submitted to a library the workflow might send an e-mail to a list of people for feedback. When each person has finished his task of reviewing the document, the workflow might send an e-mail back to the original author. SharePoint Workflows are developed in a tool called SharePoint Designer.
SharePoint Workspace
SharePoint is great, but what happens when you aren't connected to the Internet and need to access and work with your website? SharePoint Workspace allows you to take SharePoint offline.
Silverlight
Silverlight is a technology designed to provide a rich user experience from within the web browser. The Web, in general, was not designed to provide the same rich user experience that an application running on your local computer provides. With a web application, the server is serving up pages that are viewed by the client computer by using a web browser. Each time the user interacts with the application, the web browser needs to send a message back to the server. This causes the web page to refresh and flicker. Silverlight runs on the web browser of the client computer and allows a rich interaction with the web application without the continual post-back of information to the server.
Skype
Skype is a consumer-based communications tool used by people all over the world. Microsoft acquired Skype and merged the development teams into the existing Lync teams, which later became known as Skype for Business.
Skype for Business
Skype for Business is a communications system designed to provide instant communication and ad hoc meetings. Skype for Business used to be Microsoft Lync. When Microsoft acquired Skype, it rebranded Lync into a business version of Skype called Skype for Business. Skype for Business lets you conduct online meetings by sharing your screen or presentations online with multiple users simultaneously, while communicating via voice, chat, and surveys. Skype for Business is integrated with the other products in Office 365 in order to provide instant ability to communicate regardless of what software you are using.
Skype for Business Online
Skype for Business Online is the term for Microsoft's cloud version of Skype for Business. The Online portion refers to the fact that you access your Skype for Business instance over the Internet while you are online. Microsoft installs Skype for Business on servers running in their data centers and you connect to it and use it over the Internet. If a company installs Skype for Business on their own in their local data server room, then it is called On Premises instead of Online.
Visio Services
Visio Services provides SharePoint with the ability to render Visio diagrams through the web browser. Visio Services diagrams can be embedded right inside a SharePoint page. Visio Services is also used to provide a diagram of SharePoint workflow in real time.
Visual Studio
Visual Studio is a software application that is designed for development of Microsoft technologies. Visual Studio is call an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) because many development features are integrated into the application, such as the ability to run and test code, color-coded keywords, and IntelliSense. Intellisense allows developers the ability to type the beginning of a keyword and have the editor show a list of available words. The list of words narrows down as the developer continues to type additional letters of the word. This aids the developer in finding the correct keyword without having to type the entire word.
Web App
A web app is a software application that is accessed over the Web, using a web browser. For example, if you have used Facebook or LinkedIn, then you have used a web app. The Office 365 product includes a number of different web apps. In fact, even the administrative interface you use to configure Office 365 is a web app because you access it by using your web browser. In addition, web apps are available for Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
Web Part
A web part is a component of a web page that can be added, removed, or edited right from the browser. A web part is contained in a web part zone. A web part can be dragged and dropped between web part zones, using only the browser.
Wiki
Wiki is a specialized website that allows community members the ability to update the content of the website on the fly. A Wiki is not specific to SharePoint; however, SharePoint provides Wiki functionality as a feature.
