Eumaeus:
Swineherd, one of Odysseus' loyal servants. Remained faithful to Odysseus. Helped Telemachus and Odysseus kill suitors. Kind to Odysseus when he first saw him.
Charybdis:
female monster who sucks in water three times daily to form a deadly whirl pool.
Argos:
Odysseus' faithful dog, who waited to die until he saw Odysseus one last time. First to recognize him on the island.
Cyclops:
Son of sea god Poseidon. One-eyed giants who live solitary as shepards on the island Sicily. Blinded by Odysseus.
Antinous:
one of Penelope's leading suitors; an arrogant and mean young noble from Ithaca. First suitor killed by odysseus.
Scylla:
Female monster with six serpent heads, each head having a triple row of fangs. She had twelve legs.
Nausicaa:
Alcinous' daughter. She found Odysseus on the shore of her island.
Lion:
Odysseus is compared to a lion.
Alcinous:
King of Phaecia. Odysseus tells the story of his adventures to Alcinou' court.
Telemachus:
Odysseus' son. When Odysseus and Telemachus reunited, Telemachus did not believe him at first sight, then they both ended up weeping. Telemachus and Eumaeus helped Odysseus kill the suitors.
Ithaca:
Odysseus' homeland. It is an island.
Poseidon:
god of the sea; brother of Zeus. Called Earth Shaker because he is believed to cause earthquakes. He is the only god that didn't want Odysseus to come home.
Laestygonians:
Odysseus lost alot of his men to him.
Zeus:
The most powerful god, whose home is on Olympus. King of gods and men, and father of Athena.
Hades:
Hell, underworld. Odysseus has to journey here for a brief while. *You have to give the dead blood to speak.

Helios:
Sun god. He had the sacred cattle.
Simile:
Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, using a word such as "like","as","resembles", or"than".
Teiresias:
Famous blind prophet form the city Thebes. Odysseus meets him in the Land of the Dead (Hades).
Epithet:
An adjective or descriptive phrase that is regularly used to characterize a person, place, or thing.-ex.Gray-eyed goddess Athena.-ex.Homeric epithet
Hermes:
messenger god. Responsible for giving Odysseus the moly and talking to Calypso and freeing Odysseus.
Odysseus:
He is a hero in trouble. A great soldier in war, ruler, and husband. Fought in Battle of Troy, it took him 20yrs. to finally arrive back home.
The Phaecians:
Ship builders and traders. Their king was Alcinnous, they were great sailors. They helped Odysseus get back to Ithaca.
Eurycleia:
Odysseus' old nurse. Helped raise Odysseus. First person to recognize Odysseus by his scar on his leg.
Scar:
boar's scar on Odysseus' leg. His faithful maid recognizes it.
Penelope:
Odysseus' faithful wife. She did not marry a suitor because she loved Odysseus.
Lotus-Eaters:
People who feed Odysseus' men with lotus plants to make them forget Ithaca. They symbolize forgetfullness.
Circe:
Witch-goddess who turns Odysseus' men into swine, but not Odysseus, because he had moly which Hermes gave him. She warmed him of Helios' cattle, Monsters, and other obstacles.
Moly:
Special food Hermes gives to Odysseus to protect him from letting Circe turn him into an animal.
Athena:
Favorite daugther of Zeus. She favored Greeks during Trojan War. She is the great goddess of wisdom and the arts of war and peace. Often called Pallas Athena.
Achilles:
Considered greatest Greek warrior. Fought in Battle of Troy.
