Where can we find this animal?
This animal lives from southern Texas all the way down to Argentina in South America. They can be found in forests or dry scrubland.
What does this animal hunt/eat?
Ths animal is a carnivore and usually hunts at night. Sometimes they sound like house cats when they call to each other in the dark. They eat squirrels, monkeys, birds, lizards, fish, and snakes.
Guess this animal
they are sometimes called "painted leopards" because of the handsome markings on their fur. Having such gorgeous fur has been a problem for these cats, though. For many years people used their skins to make fur coats.
geuss this animal
Since 1982, they have been on the U.S. endangered species list. They became rare for a couple of reasons. Too many were killed for their skins, and too much of their habitat has been cleared away for farming, and factories.
guess this animal
Endangered Status The Ocelot is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as endangered in Arizona and Texas. The Ocelot population has declined drastically because of the loss of its habitat to agriculture and residential development, deliberate eradication by farmers trying to protect small livestock and poultry, and the trade in exotic furs and pets. The species is now fully protected in the U.S., and the trafficking of skins and the selling of live Ocelots as pets are banned. These cats require large expanses of densely brushed habitat, which is hard to come by in southern Texas, where the last U.S. cats are found. Efforts are underway to restore Ocelot habitat in the Rio Grande Valley, but whether this handsome animal can be saved in the U.S. remains to be seen. (The Ocelot still survives, though in small numbers, in Mexico.)
guess
A medium-size, slim cat. Grayish to tawny or gold, heavily marked with black-bordered brown spots that tend to form lines. Spots include rosettes, rings, speckles, slashes, and bars. Tail is 1/3 of my animal's body.
geuss
These two animals are sub-speicies to my animal.Jaguar is much larger and marked almost entirely with rosettes. Margay is smaller, with similar coloration and markings; has longer tail, longer than hindleg.
geuss
They give birth to 1 litter of 2-4 young born after gestation of 70 days; births fall-winter in Texas.
geuss
My animals habitat is Forested or brushy areas and dense chaparral (flat plains, rocky hills, and mountain slopes).
geuss
My animal climbs well and silently, and sometimes even catches birds perched in trees. Its principal foods include mice, rats, rabbits, birds, snakes, lizards, fish, frogs, and young or small domestic animals. A good swimmer, it occasionally hunts along streams. My animal is usually solitary but sometimes travel and hunt in pairs, probably as mates, maintaining contact and signaling each other with meows like those of domestic cats. Mothers have often been killed as humans captured their kittens, which, while affectionate and easily tamed when young, become unpredictable and sometimes dangerous when mature.
other names for my animal
known as the Painted Leopard or McNenney's Wildcat
status
Since 2002, Oregon Zoo has been working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Brazilian Ocelot Consortium and the government of Brazil to play a role in the ocelot's survival. It was determined several years ago that North American zoos' ocelot population should be replaced by a genetically defined subspecies -- the Brazilian ocelot. Oregon Zoo is one of 10 U.S. zoos involved with the consortium.

Oregon Zoo's ocelots belong to the southern Brazilian species of ocelot, Leopardus pardalis mitis, which inhabits the tropical and subtropical forests of southern Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
CITES Appendix I; Endangered.
other places he lives
Found in Arizona, Texas and every country south of the United States, except Chile. Occupies a wide spectrum of habitats, including mangrove forests and coastal marshes, savanna grasslands and pastures, thorn scrub, and tropical forests of all types.
behavior
Primarily nocturnal cats, ocelots are generally solitary animals. Diurnal activity is documented but mainly during cool winter days, in areas where prey may be diurnal, or in areas subject to little human disturbance. During the day, they rest in trees or other dense foliage, and will occasionally share their spot with another ocelot of the same gender. Ocelots hunting during the day are very secretive, keeping to areas of dense brush or other heavy cover. They tend to be solitary except when mating or in the case of a female with cubs. Ocelots are not known to have any migratory patterns. Male ocelots confine themselves to a range of about seven square miles, while females inhabit smaller areas of about 4 square miles. A male's home range usually overlaps that of several females. Vocalization: meows.
markings
The ocelot has a single, white spot on the back of each ear and some white markings around its eyes and mouth. Two black lines run the length of either side of its face and the tail is marked with black bands. Fur is short and close, marked with both rosettes and spots that tend to run in parallel chains along the sides of the body. Excellent climber and swimmer. Has quite powerful legs, making it one of the fastest wildcats.
size
Males are slightly larger than females. Weight ranges from 20 to 40 pounds. Head and body length ranges from 21 to 40 inches, tail length ranges from 11 to 18 inches. Height can be up to 18 inches.

The ocelot's spotted coat helps him camouflage and not be eaten. Going in trees helps them be camouflaged, too. Their large eyes help them see well in dim light. Their eyes are also reddish-brown. The ocelot has white spots behind the ears, just like lots of other forest animals. These beautiful animals are not as plentiful as before. They have been put on the endangered species list. What led up to the ocelots being on the endangered list?

Some ocelots live in the rainforest and some live in grassland. They are bigger than house cats, growing up to 4.5 feet including the tail. They have brownish fur with black spots, but their bellies are lighter colored. Ocelots are good hunters. What are two things that make them good hunters? Good Hunters

Ocelots have excellent eyesight to help them catch their prey. The things they catch are small mammals. Ocelots are just like regular cats, but their behavior is different. One way they are different is their eyes. How are an ocelot's eyes different than ours?

Ocelots are nocturnal and diurnal and mostly hunt on ground. During the day you will find ocelots hunting on trails. These attractive creatures can be found in tropical rainforests. These cats are found in a variety of places in Belize. Ocelots feed on small mammals. Where did the word ocelot come from?
