Structured Observations

This involves the precise measurement of behaviour in an objective way using coding schemes/ behaviour checklists.

Unstructured Observations

This type of observation records all data and does not have a structure or a pre-set criteria.

Naturalistic Observations

This is carried out in the participants own natural environment and it is left as it is normally.

Controlled Observations

This involves observing people in conditions contrived by the researcher.

Participant Observation

This is where the researchers are in some way a part of the activity/ group of people whose behaviour is being observed.

Overt Observations

This is when the participant is aware that they are being observed and recorded.

Covert Observation

This is when the participant is not aware that their behaviour is being observed and recorded.

Time Sampling

This involves observations for set lengths of times at set intervals.

Event Sampling

This involves observing continuously for the entire duration of the observation period and recording specific behaviours each time they occur.

Tacit Consent

Consent would have been given had all the facts of the study been made clear to the participant.
