Gain: Consume more calories and burn fewer calories |
What is basal metabolism?
Sum of all involuntary activities necessary to sustain life (i.e. circulation, respiration, temperature maintenance; not digestion or voluntary activities)
What factors affect basal metabolic rate?
Rate at which the body uses energy to support basal metabolism
Varies from person to person Controlled by thyroxine (T4; iodine-dependent hormone) The less secreted, the lower the energy requirements for basal functions Lowest rate during sleep Other factors affect BMR (i.e. age, height, body composition, growth, stress, fever) |
Be able to estimate basal energy output using the basic formula shown in class (I will give you the formula, and weight in kilograms)
How to convert pounds to kilograms: divide pounds by 2.2 Ex: 180 lb/2.2=81.8 kg or round up to 82 kg |
Men: Kg body weight x 24=cal/day
Women: Kg body weight x23=cal/day |
Which populations are susceptible to food borne illnesses?
The old and the young, immune suppressed, and women who are pregnant.
Why are there so many cases of food borne illnesses in the US?
Global food supply
Convenience Decreases in eating Knowledge At risk people |
What does ‘globalization’ of food mean?
It means we want food year round.
What governmental agencies are responsible for regulating our food supply?
FDA and USDA
