SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
The system that innervates the skeletal (striated) muscle
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
1. regulates the automatic body functions
2. divided into the sympathetic nervous system[adrenergic] and the parasympathetic nervous system [cholinergic]
SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM--ADRENERGIC
Functions to maintain homeostasis and to provide defense against stressors
SYMPATHETIC INFLUENCE
Increases HR, constricts blood vessels, dilates bronchi, decreases peristalsis, decreases gastric and salivary secretions, closes anal sphincter, stimulates glycogenesis and glycogenolysis, stimulates production of epinephrine, relaxes bladder, closes bladder sphincter, dilates pupil, accommodates for far vision, causes "goose flesh"
PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM--CHOLINERGIC
Is responsible for conserving and restoring vegetative state
PARASYMPATHETIC INFLUENCE
Decreases HR, dilates visceral and brain vessels, constricts bronchi, increases peristalsis, increases gastric and salivary secretions, opens anal sphincter, contracts bladder, opens bladder sphincter, constricts pupil, accommodates for near vision
Enoxaparin (Lovenox)
Anticoagulant used to decrease risk of DVT
Dibucaine (Nupercaine)
topical anesthetic
Gabapentin (Neurontin)
anticonvulsant used in treatment of neuropathic pain *monitor S/E: dizziness, somnolence, and visual changes
Baclofen (Lioresal, Lioresal Intrathecal)
muscle relaxant use in treatment of spasticity. * abrupt withdrawal syndrome may occur if stopped abruptly: S/E: muscle rigidity, increased spasticity, high fever, AMS, poss rhabdomyolysis, multi system organ failure and deth
Tizanidine hydrochloride
(Zanaflex)
muscle relaxant used in treatment of spasticity. **S/E: dizziness, somnolence, mild hypotension, asthenia (loss of strength or energy) and abnormal liver function tests.
Bisacodyl (Dulcolax)
stimulant suppository often used as part of bowel program. * may need to use dibucain ointment before administering to client w/ SCI at or above T6
Dantrolene sodium (Dantrium)
muscle relaxant used in treatment of chronic muscle spasticity
**potential hepatic toxicity
