Explain Diverticular Disease

Outpouchings in the wall of the bowel, when the mucosa herniates though the muscularis (muscle layers) at weak points in wall where the vessels enter.

-age (deterioration & weakening of muscularis)
-Poor Diet -Poor Bowel habits (accumulation of contents = inc. intraluminal pressure) |

Complications (2)

-obstruction or constriction of outpouchings
-MAJOR: perforation of bowel - bacteria enter peritoneal cavity |
