. Aim towards "trigone" not apex


. Slowly aspirate urine


. If blood flows into syringe, withdraw and repeat attempt with new equipment


. Release negative pressure, withdraw needle


. Puncture seals over quickly especially due to 45 degree angle

. Drop of oil on several slides


. Dip edge of blade into oil


. Select "fresh" lesions, pinch fold of skin


. scrape until drops of capillary blood appear


. Transfer material to slide


. label location of scraping


. Repeat: suspected sarcoptes may require many scrapings


. Examine immediately, not dead or alive, life stages

. Attach tape to glass slide, sticky side out


. Part hair, touch sticky take to hair and skin

What 2 methods of sample collection are for dermatophytes

. If lesion is heavily contaminated: cleanse site with cotton and sterile water


. Use sterile hemostat, pluck damaged hairs & scale from edge of lesion


. Press hairs, etc. into surface of dermatophyte medium

Collecting from Lesions

. If no lesions, brush entire cat with a new toothbrush (2 - 3 min)


. Press toothbrush lightly into medium several times

. Swab tip should only touch the culture site
