Pulse Oximetry
Definition
Measures arterial blood oxygen saturation. It is the percentage of all hemoglobin binding sites that are occupied by O2.
Pulse Oximeter Assessment Sites (6)
Fingers
Toes
Earlobes
Forehead
Bridge of Nose
Sole of Foot (Infant)
Pulse Oximetry Values
Acceptable
90%-100%

Blood Pressure
Definition
The pressure exerted by the blood as it flows through the arteries.
Pulse Pressure Equation
Systolic - Diastolic = Pulse Pressure
eg: 116/70 = 116 - 70 = 46
Hypertension
Blood pressure that is persistently above normal. Diagnosed with at least an elevated blood pressure st two different times.
Hypotension
A blood pressure that is below normal. Systolic reading consistently between 85 and 110 mmHg in an adult.
Orthostatic Hypotension
A blood pressure that falls when the client sits or stands.
Blood Pressure - Adult
What to report to HCP
Systolic: Greater than 140
Less than 100

Diastolic: Greater than 90
