What role does the epiglottis play in swallowing?

The epiglottis, a thin flap of tissue over the larynx, closes during swallowing to prevent aspiration.

In general, the opening should be 1/8" larger than the stoma itself. An opening that fits too tightly can injure the stoma. If the opening is too large, skin surrounding the stoma may come in contact with feces, causing skin breakdown.
