Aided Language Stimulation approach

The teacher/SLP/parent uses the child's device when communicating with the child. It is a direct use model to show the child how the device is used and in a physical activity of speaking and selecting. It is a great model to be done as natural by parent as possible

Use a toy that can be activated or made to do something by pressing a switch. Similar to turning on a light switch and having the light go on. The student should see the cause/effect relationship

Alphabet supplementation

Using an alphabet board to point to the first letter of the word. Long process. Slow rate of exchange. User needs to interpret is listener understands and can move on to next word

Step Scanning

Each time the switch is activated the cursor/indicator moves to the next icon. In group scanning the cursor moves to each grouping of icons. This method can be tiring, but is useful those individuals with severed motor control issues.

Automatic Scanning

The cursor moves continuously in a patter (row column or linear) until the switch is activated for the cursor to stop. The user needs to have good control

Group Item Scanning

Best used for common groups of items and selection is a process of elimination until the desired item is left. Most common group scan in row-column scanning

ALS and AAC

In an attempt to prepare the user to utilize an AAC the device is introduced in the middle stage after consideration in the early stage. The late stage involves adaptation to use of AAC to meet the changing needs of its user
