Acts of Trade and Navigation (The Navigation Acts) 1660's
-Through out the 1660's these acts helped English to gain as much financially.
-Prior to these acts the colonies could trade with anyone they wanted, this restricted trade to mainly the British colonies without high taxes on the goods.
Enumerated Goods
-Under the Navigation Acts products that could only be exported from the colonies directly to England or within the British Empire.
-Goods such as tobacco, rice, sugar,furs, and naval stores.
Naval Stores
-Goods,exported from the colonies, that could be used to benefit the Navy in England.
-Things like timber which could be used for the masts of ships.
Admiralty Courts
-British court used to crack down on smuggling in the colonies.
Privy Council
-Council close to the King which would advise him on the colonies.
-Each member of the council would have the power to veto colonial legislature, along with the Royal governors of each state.
Mulberry Trees
-Trees planted in Georgia because the worms which eat the fruit from the trees produce silt which us used to make very profitable silk.
Precedents
-Established norms and laws that the colonists would use to help their cause.
-Ruled by "Common Law"
-gave more power to the Assembly and less to the royally appointed governors.
Fort Duquesne
-French fort located in Pittsburg.
-Corneal G. Washington planned on taking over the Fort during the French & Indian War but when he saw it he knew he needed more men and supplies.
-Was later conquered by General Amherst who was sent to backup G. Washington's troops.
French and Indian War (1753-1763)
-War between the French and the British.
-Started when the British colonists from Virginia started moving west into the Ohio River Valley. The French knew that if the British began to move there they would colonize it as their own and stop the movement of French supplies from their colonies in Quebec and Louisiana.
-During this war the British took the French's colonies of Quebec and Louisiana and Spain (France's ally) colony of Florida.
William Pitt
-Prime Minister in England and in 1758 wanted to completely remove the French Crown from North America.
-Sent G. Washington supplies and the needed extra troops along with General Amherst who knew a great deal about warfare.
