Taoism-Daoism
Far East Asian (oriental) philosophy based on the teachings of Laozi (From approx. 500BC). Happiness comes from people living in a harmonious relationship with nature.
Example: Chinese feng (wind) shui (water), S. Korean flag, and Japanese Shinto.
Confucianism
Far East Asian (Oriental) philosophy based on the teachings of Confucius (From China approx. 500). A social hierarchy based on age with a strong respect for laws, traditions, and family.

Reasons there are two Koreas and causes of the Korean war
1. Japan toll over the Korean Peninsula during WWII.
2. The USA & USSR defeated Japan in WWII.
3. USSR took N. Korea from Japan after WWII, they set up a communist system.
4.The USA took S. Korea from Japan after WWII and setup a democracy there.
5 Communist N. Korea attacked S. Korea in 1950
DMZ
Demilitarized zone- the border between the Koreas at 38N. It is approx. 1 mile wide across the peninsula where no one is allowed. The North and South have armies lined up outside the DMZ.
US military presence at the DMZ
The US has approx. 30,000 armed forces at the DMZ. The Korean War has never officially ended with a peace agreement.
Mao and Mainland China
After WWII, Mao won a civil war in China against those who wanted a Democratic China (nationalist) in 1949. He established the People's Republic of China (communist China) on the mainland.
His government still exists today.
Taiwan
In 1949, the Nationalists who survived fled to Taiwan and established the Republic of China (ROC) (Free China)
Mao's great leap forward
Mao's attempt to transform China into a communist society (similar to what Pol Pot in Cambodia). It was actually a serious leap backwards.

Mao's attempt to destroy China's ancient culture and civilization.
One China Policy
The US and most of the world used to recognize Taiwan as the official China. This is because the USA had no relations with Mao. Mao then developed the nuclear bomb in the 1960s (5th member of the nuclear club) and could no longer be ignored. Taiwan is no longer recognized officially as a country, even by the UN. (China considers Taiwan to be a renegade state of theirs.)
APEC
Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation. Consists of 21 pacific rim countries that seek to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia Pacific region. Members account for over 50% of the world's GDP.

Chinese population control measures
China had had a 1child policy to try to slow their population growth. Because of this, Indoa should have the world's largest population soon. (India does not have a child policy)

The Notth Korean dictators have brainwashed their people to think they are godly & worship them. This is easier to do in a Confucious society.
