Vital Signs

Vital Signs on Admission as soon as baby is out.

What to check when baby is out and what to give

Weight, length, head circumfrence, chest circumfrence. Daily weight.
Erythromycin ointment to prevent gonorrhea and chlymidia.
Vitamin K 1mg IM. Dextrose stick PRN as need.
D5W less then 40.
Breast Feeding

Breast feedign indicated as soon as out. Formula or breast milk after 24 hours of first fed, usually done before discharge.

Newborn Sleep States

Deep quiet Sleep- Regular breathing, no movement except sudden body jerks
Active REM- Irrgular breathing/body twitching may cry out but no awake
Quiet alert- Infant awake and involved with the surroundings (awake and crying)
Temperature regulation (heat loss)

Evaporation- Heat lis lost when fluids from the body turn to vapor, wrap dry child
Conduction- Heat is transferred from a warmer object to cooler object by direct contact, cold surfaces, somthing over
Radiation- Heat is transferred from a warm oject to a cooler object by indirect contact, cold basinet, keep baby covered
Convection- Heat is lost from warm body to surface cooler air currents, cold rooms, keep baby covered.

Caput succedaneum- soft tissue edema, fluid absorbed few days common pressure
Cephalohematoma- Rupture blood vessel between the skull bone and periostium
Fontenels- Soft and flat, 2-3cm long, 3-4sm wide. If suncken dehydration, if up ICP.
Anterior close 18 months
Posterior- 8-12 weeks.
