Periodic Law
When the properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic number.
Periodic Table
An arrangement of the elements according to similarity in their chemical properties and in order of increasing atomic number
Periods
These are one of the seven horizontal rows of a periodic table having the same number of electron shells (or levels).
Groups
The vertical column of elements with the same number of electrons in their outermost shell. The group number indicates the number of outermost electrons. Elements in the same group share similar chemical properties.
Metals
good conductor of heat & electricty
Shiney (reflecting light)
Malleable (easily bent)
Ductile (made into wire)
Electropositive (tendency to loose their valence electrons)
Grouped in L of periodic table
Nonmetals
Element with poor conducting properties. Are Electronegative & accept electrons in their valence shell. Found in upper R of periodic table.
Metalloids
Element w/ properties that are intermediate between those of metal and non-metals, such as semiconductivity. They are also found between metals and non-metals in the periodic table.
