What are the two types of Neurulation?

Primary
Secondary |
What is primary neurulation?
Neuroblasts aggregate to form neural plate which folds to form neural tube
What is secondary neurulation?
A condensation of mesencymal cells form a solid, dense tube, the medullary cord, that is later hollowed out to form the neural tube. [Happens in posterior]

What are the 4 stages of primary neurulation?
Formation of the neural plate: BMP4 induces ectodermal cells to become neural plate.
- Shaping of the neural plate: Cells are signaled to become columnar and the groove forms along with the folds due to the MHP [medial hinge point] regions and two DLHP [dorsolateral hinge point regions]. - Bending of the neural folds: Epidermis expands putting pressure on the neural plate. Its folds fold along, creasing at the hinge point regions until both folds meet. - Closure of the neural tube: The folds adhere to each other and cells merge. |
