Sensory neural connections create a map of the receptor surface. Differentiate between a topography map and a receptive field.
Topography map – think cortical representation , like an area of the brain

Receptive field – an area of the receptor surface (skin) that when stimulated causes a neural response (APs).
Eye suturing and dye injection experiments show that ______ are plastic.

A. receptive fields
B. topography maps
B. topography maps
What is amblyopia?
commonly known as lazy eye, is the eye condition noted by reduced vision not correctable by glasses or contact lenses and is not due to any eye disease. The brain, for some reason, does not fully acknowledge the images seen bythe amblyopic eye. About 3% of children have this. Constant unilateral strabismus (inability to align eyes) can cause this.

Treatment – patch unaffected eye to “strengthen” the lazy eye. Need to do this before the age of 2!
True or False:

Development of normal sensory perception requires sensory experience.
True.

like big hulking bottom line of the lecture true.
Remember, _________ is important for long term potentiation (LTP). Well, it’s also important for plasticity during the critical period. If you put in a blockade for it, what happens.
NMDA

• If you put an NMDA receptor blockade, you destroy the ocular dominance columns. Alternatively, if you add NMDAitself, you allow the borders of the ocular dominance columns to be more clear and delineated.
