Normal adult opening pressure
90-180 mmH2O
Opening pressure indicating intracranial HTN
>250 mmH2O
Clotting
None in normal CSF (no fibrinogen); Positive in traumatic taps, suppurative/TB meningitis, spinal block
Differentiating traumatic tap and subarachnoid hemorrhage
Blood will clear between the 1st and 3rd tubes in traumatic tap, and D-Dimer will be negative. Blood will remain in subarachnoic hemorrhage, and it will be D-Dimer positive.
What happens to protein concentration as CSF passes down the spine?
The concentration of protein increases.
How to differentiate CSF from snot?
There are two isoforms of transferrin present in the CSF, and only one in other body fluids.
Cortical vs. lacunar stroke
Cortical: increased LD, AST and CK. Lacunar: increased LD with normal AST and CK.
LD levels
Decreased in traumatic tap, increased in intracranial hemorrhage.
