Define neuron doctrine
each neuron is its own, operates alone, and is separated from other neurons by extracellular space
What are bundles of axons called in the PNS?
nerves
What are bundles of axons called in the CNS?
tracts/fasciculi
Nissl substance is comprised of?
RER (translates proteins)
Where are Nisssl bodies not found?
axon/axon hillock
What are the 3 main types of fibrillar components in the neuron?
1) neurofilaments
2) microfilaments
3) microtubules
What are neurofilaments made of/purpose?
polymerized structural proteins that stabilize the dendrite and don't allow much change (bones)
What are microfilaments made of/purpose?
actin/myosin and used for motility
What are microtubules made of/purpose?
tubulin/proteins and used for shape/stability but especially for transport
What are the 2 types of astrocytes and their primary location?
1) protoplasmic (grey)
2) fibrous (white)
Describe the physical differences btw the types of astrocytes
protoplasmic have short, thick dendrites
fibrous have few, thin dendrites (spider like)
What is the primary function of astrocytes?
Create 'end feet' that covers the vascular system: form pia layers (ext and int limjiting membrane), surround capillaries (blood-brain barrier), separate fiber tracts
What is the function of the oligodendrocytes and what does it not do that Schwann cells do?
Myelinates many neurons in the CNS but inhibits neural regrowth
What are the 2 functions of Schwann cells?
Myelinate one axon and facilitates neural regrowth
What is the function of microglia?
In injured/diseased brain they phagocytose debris and secrete pro-inflammatory substances
What is the function of ependymal cells?
Lines the ventricles (with pia creates the choroid plexus to create CSF) and lines central canals (with astrocytes form internal limiting membrane)
