What components determine cardiovascular responses?

The balance between the sympathetic & parasympathetic components of the autonomic nervous system.

What are baroreceptors?

Mechanoreceptors that detect changes in pressure.

What is the baroreceptor reflex?

The reflexes by which blood pressure is maintained; collectively known as the baroreflex.

What are two types of baroreceptors?

Arterial baroreceptors & cardiopulmonary baroreceptors

What is the role of sympathetic activation in the baroreceptor reflex?

It leads to increased cardiac contractility, increased HR, venoconstriction, and arterial vasoconstriction - ultimately leads to increased BP via elevation of total peripheral resistance & cardiac output (CO).

What is the role of parasympathetic activation in the baroreceptor reflex?

Leads to a decrease in the HR & a small decrease in contractility, resulting in a decrease in BP.
