Advantage and disadvantage of a hub

A hub is cheap and simple (easiest way to build a network, but wastes bandwidth and generates a lot of traffic

What does a hub not know about?

What specific host is supposed to receive data

What does a hub do?

A hub replicates all incoming bits to all interfaces

What device often has a built in DHCP server?

A router

What is switch?

A switch is a device that filters and forwards packets between LAN segments. SWitches operate at the data link layer (layer 2) and sometimes the network layer (layer 3) of the OSI model and therefore support any packet protocol.

What is a router?

A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP network. Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect.

How do routers determine the best path for forwarding packets?

They use headers and forwarding tables and protocols such as ICMP to communicate

What does a switch do that a hub doens't?

Keep a record of the MAC addresses of all the devices connected to it. By doing this, a switch knows exactly what port to forward a frame to. Devices connected to a switch also get the full bandwidth unlike a hub.
