Motor neurone

Receive impulses in the spinal cord and transmit them to effectors to carry out the desired response.

Receptor

Detect stimuli and then send impulses towards the central nervous system (CNS, which consists of the brain and the spinal cord). The CNS interprets the impulses then sends a responding impulse towards an effector which carries out a response. If the brain is involved in this process, the overall feedback will be voluntary. If only the spinal cord is involved, then the feedback is involuntary or reflex (the response is carried out in a reflex arc).

Reflex arc

During a reflex action, electrical impulses from the sensory receptor pass along sensory neurones to the CNS. They are then passed along a relay neurone and then a motor neurone to the effector organ.
