Thalamus

Receives most of the sensory impulses from the body and distributes them to the special sense areas

Hypothalamus

Contains the heat regulating centre and is also concerned with hunger, thirst and emotional change

Cerebrum - location and anatomy

•Two large hemispheres

• left hemisphere controls the right side of the body, right hemisphere controls the left side of the body

Cerebrum - functions

• motor areas which initiate the contraction of voluntary muscles

• sensory areas which receive impulses from the skin, muscles, bones and joints

• special sense centres dealing with sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch

• centre of higher mental power - consciousness, memory, intelligence and reasoning

• contains the thalamus and hypothalamus which control the autonomic nervous system

Cerebellum - anatomy and location

• underneath the posterior portion of the cerebrum

Cerebellum - functions

• balance

• muscle co-ordination

• muscle to e

Brain stem - anatomy

• mid brain

• pons variolli

• medulla oblongata

Made up of three parts

Mid Brain - functions

• relay station connecting upper parts of brain and lower parts of brain and spinal cord

• contains reflex centres affecting eyes, head and neck in response to visual or other stimuli

Pons Varolii - anatomy and function

Forms the link joining various parts of brain to one and other.

Joins the cerebrum above, through the mid brain to the medulla and cerebellum below

Medulla Oblongata - anatomy

The link between the brain and the spinal cord, joining the pons above to the spinal cord below.

Medulla Oblongata - functions

• contains the motor fibres which cross over controlling the opposite sides of the body

• contains the respiratory, cardiac and vaso-motor centres

• contains reflex centre which control the food and air passages and the reflex of sneezing, coughing, swallowing and vomiting

What are the meninges?

Three protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord

• Dura Mater

• Arachnoid Mater

• Pia Mater

Their function is to

• maintain the brains position in the cranial vault

• to protect the brim and spinal cord

• absorb cerebrospinal fluid

What is CerebroSpinal Fluid? And what does it do?

• lubricates the brain and spinal cord

• supports the brain

• acts as a shock absorber

• washes away waste and toxic substances

What does the Central Nervous System consist of?

The Brain and spinal cord

Paralysis of lower limbs possible including bladder and rectum

What is paraplegia?

Paralysis of lower limbs possible including bladder and rectum

What is tetra(quadra)plegia

Paralysis of all four limbs

What is hemiplegia

Complete or partial paralysis of one side of the body

What is monoplegia

Paralysis of one limb

What is monoplegia

Paralysis of one limb

What is meningitis?

Inflammation of the meninges
