Olfactory test

Visual or non visual smell detection, none irritant

Optic test

Menace test, symmetry of pupils and eyes

Oculomotor, trochlear, abducens test

Pupil contraction ocolumotor, all 3 head movement eyes following

Trigeminal branches

Opthalmic, maxillary, mandibular

Trigeminal test opthalmic

Palpebral reflex (tapping eye)

Trigeminal test maxillary

Touching/pinching upper lip lateral to canine tooth

Trigeminal test mandibular

Touching/pinching lower lip

Trigeminal test maxillary/mandibular horse

Closed homeostats tap face to induce twitch often with head nod or use to probe nasal septum and indce twitch

Facial test

Facial symmetry (lips, ear carriage) horses will show issues in nostril asymmetry or eyelids in proximal lesion or ear drop

Vestibulocochlear test

Use a loud noise though doesnt show unilateral issue. Blindfold horses will present bigger headtilt

Glossopharangeal and vagus test

Touch L and R side of caudal pharangeal wall to see contraction

Accessory test

Muscle atrophy over trapezius (innervation) though other influencing factors may ruin it

Hypoglossal test

D- Atrophy/asymmetry tongue, lick nose after gag reflex in tact. Unilateral only lick one side


H- palpate tongue and bring it out, should retract back and swollow if ok
