What are the 7 types of crystal structures?

Simple Cubic, Tetragonal, Orthorhombic, Hexagonal, Rhombohedral, Monoclinic, Triclinic

What are the 4 lattice types?

Simple, Face Centred, Body Centred, Base Centred

What are the total number of allowed nodes? (Relative to Quantum Numbers)

Primary Quantum Number-1

Why does the p-orbital split in energy levels? How many levels? How many electrons are in each state?

The p-orbital splits because the spin can either interact positively or negatively with the angular momentum. There are 2 possible levels. 4 in one state and 2 in the other.

What is the bonding principle of covalent and ionic bonding.

Electron cloud interacting for covalent. Electron transfer and ionic attraction for ionic bonding.

How does a hydrogen bond differ from a normal polar bond?

Hydrogen bonds have a much higher polarity due to the electronegativity difference?

What is the principle of metallic bonding?

Sea of delocalized electrons

The higher the miller indices, the ____________ the interplanar distance. The relationship is

Smaller. 1/sqrt((h/a)^2+(k/b)^2+(l/c)^2)

What are epitaxial structures?

One crystal film grown on a bulk crystal.

What is MBE? Explain how it works.

Molecular Beam Epitaxy. (Several source crucibles are heated to evaporate the material. The vapour is released in a controlled matter to deposit on a source. (Thermal Evaporating works in a similar way but with only one material)

What is ion sputtering?

Ion sputtering is bombarding the target sample with ions to coat with the ion.

What is CVD? How does it work?

Chemical Vapour Deposition. A vacuum chamber is pumped with a gas, which grows on a seed in the chamber.

Is the anode the source material or being coated in electroplating?

The source material?

If we want to cut a crystal along a certain plane, where should we cleave relative to the plane?

Perpendicular to the plane

If 2 crystal fields have greater overlap, is the energy lower or higher?

Lower

Why are only 14 Bravais structures possible if there are 7 crystal types and 4 lattice structures?

Several structures are the same and thus degenerate

What is a quasicrystal

5 sided symmetry, but NO translational symmetry

How many directions are textured crystals ordered in?

One
