dorsal recumbent OR sims'
How far should you insert a female cath?
2-3 in into urethra
After urine begins to flow in a female cath, what should you do?
insert an additional inch to assure that the balloon portion of the cath is in the bladder
How should you hold the penis prior to cath insertion?
perpendicular to body
How far should you insert a male catheter?
6-7 in
When is the only time that a catheter can be disconnected from the drainage system?
only to perform ordered irrigations
How should urine samples be obtained?
from a drainage port w/ a small-bore needle using sterile technique

clamp the tubing below the port
Why should drainage bags not be elevated above the level of the cavity being drained?
to prevent reflux
How much mL of urine can you remove from the bladder at once?
700 mL,

if there is more left in the bladder, wait 15-30 min, then continue
Wat is the purpose of catheter irrigation?
to prevent obstruction of flow or to remove buildup of sediment in long-term use
How do you do a CLOSED urethral cath irrigation?
1. draw soln into syringe using sterile technique
2. clamp cath below the injection port
3. cleans port w/ alcohol
4. insert needle into injection port at 30 degree angle
5. slowly inject fluid
6. remove clamp
7. solution drains into bag
How do you do an OPEN urethral cath irrigation?
1. use sterile technique
2. cleanse around the catheter & disconnect tubing
3. gently instill 30 mLof solution
4. allow fluid to drain by gravity into sterile basin
5. disinfect ends of cath tubing and reconnect
If a solution is easily instilled but does not return, what should the pt do?
turn to the side
If fluid still doesnt return fm irrigation after pt turns, what should you do?
depress the syringe bulb to provide gentle suction
How should you provide perineal care in a pt w/ a cath?
soap and water 2-3x/day, then apply antimicrobial ointment to the insertion site
Why should you secure the tubing to the pt's leg?
to prevent traction
What is the MINIMUM DRAINAGE catheter output?
30 cc/h
S&S of infection?
foul-smelling urine w/
-pus
-blood or
-mucus streaks
*special precaution* for ureterostomy tube?

wash w/ water and soap, rise, dry completely

& clean perineum w/ soap and water
What should you do to the self-cath prior to insertion?
lubricate w/ water-soluble lubricant
After self-cath starts returning urine, how far should you advance it?
.5-1 in
