What is respiration?

When chemical energy stored in food(glucose) is released by all living cells through a series of enzyme controlledreactions called respiration

What is the name of the energy form which is generated in respiration?

ATP

ATP must be built up from this during respiration and then broken back down into this when used.

ADP + Pi

Give 2 examples of the use of ATP in cellular activities.

Muscle contractions, cell division, protein synthesis, transmission of nerve impulses, photosynthesis.

What are the two types of respiration?

Aerobic and fermentation (anaerobic)

What controls respiration?

enzymes

What is produced in stage 1 (glycolysis) of respiration?

Pyruvate and 2 ATP

Where does stage 1 (glycolysis) take place in the cell?

The cytoplasm

What does aerobic respiration mean?

Oxygen is present

What does fermentation (anaerobic respiration) mean?

No oxygen is present

During stage 2 of aerobic respiration, what are the end products?

Carbon dioxide and water with 36ATP

How many molecules of ATP are formed in the complete breakdown of one glucose molecule?

38ATP

During fermentation (anaerobic) in animals, what is the final product in stage 2?

Lactic acid

During fermentation (anaerobic) in plants and yeast, what is the final product in stage 2?

Carbon dioxide and ethanol

Where does fermentation take place in the cell?

The cytoplasm

How many ATP molecules are produced during fermentation?

2 ATP

What is piece of equipment known as?

What is piece of equipment known as?

A respirometer

What would this equipment be measuring?

What would this equipment be measuring?

The rate of oxygen uptake during aerobic respiration.

What would this piece of equipment be measuring in respiration?

What would this piece of equipment be measuring in respiration?

The amount of energy in the form of heat being produced during respiration.
