Anemia
A reduction in either the number of red blood cells or the amount of hemoglobin in the blood.

Initial Visit-finger stick Hgb should be around 13-15. At 28 weeks should be 11-13.

Hgb of 12 or less before 20 weeks necessitates evaluation and therapy. Evaluation: diet review, physical exam, lab analysis.


May appear tired, pale, and have poor appetite. May have low BP.

Initial Labs should include HgB, HCT, RBC

Herbs: Alfalfa, bilberry, cherry, dandelion, red raspberry, yellow dock, Nettle

Diet: apples, apricots, leafy greens, parsley, yams, turnip greens, raisins, okra, grape juice, prunes, organic iron supplements.
foods highest in Iron: Kidney beans, blackstrap molasses, rice bran, raw beet greens, peaches, prune juice.

Floradix, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast.Vitamin B12, Folic Acid plus Biotin
Vitamin C rich foods to aid absorption. Vitamin B12 if vegetarian. Avoid ingesting calcium and fiber along with supplements.
Hypertension
140/90 on at least two occasions six hours apart.
Benign reasons: anxiety, multiple gestation, technical errors, lack of salt, inadequate calcium, inadequate dairy or fluid intake, obesity (due to too small of cuff), lack of exercise.

R/O- White coat syndrome, pseudotumor cerebri, metabolic toxemia, Conn's syndrome, Kidney disease, Heart problems, pheochromocytoma, SLE, Cerebral/Vascular disturbances, Hyperthyroidism, CNS disorders,
Hydatidiform Mole, Malignant hypertension, Liver disease.
Low Blood Pressure
90/60 common in young woman, vegetarians, and women who exercise frequently
