BZD - Benzos
Action / metabolism
- CNS depressants: minor tranquilizer category
- Enhance GABA action
- Highly protein bound, metabolized by liver
- Lipid soluble: long half life.
BZD - Benzos
Indications
Anxiety, Insomnia, Anticonvulsant, alcohol withdrawal, muscle relaxor
Benzo sfx
- Sedation
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Leukopenia - lowers WBC
Benzos:
Interactions and sfx
- Increased action with other CNS depressans: Alcohol, other benzos.
- Do not take with other CNS depressants, may lead to resp. dep.
- Kava kava, valerian root: increase sedation effects
- Sympathomimetics lower effects (caffeine, tobacco)
- Possible teratogenic effects
BZDs dependence
- Ideally for short term use only
- long term leads to tolerance buildup
- Do not stop abruptly
- W/D: agitation, insomnia, tremors, muscular cramps, sweating
BZD long term withdrawal s/s
similar to alcohol
cant be life theatening
Paranoia, delirium, HTN. Status Epilepticus, fever
BZDs include:
Ativan, Valium, Versed
BZDs overdose interventions
Antidote: Flumazenil (Romazicon)
- If conscious: emetic + activated charcoal
- If unconsious: airway maintenance
- IV vasopressors for severe drop in BP
Buspar
generalized anxiety, depression related anxiety
Interacts with Grapefruit
Benadryl
Anxiety related insomnia
Propranolol (Inderal)
Beta blocker
Performance anxiety
Reduces peripheral effects of anxiety
Anxiolitics teaching:
Do not take with alcohol
Do not drive
