Achilles
"swift runner", protagonist of greek side. fights for kleos and time, and decides to sit out after agamemnon takes briseis from him. the greeks begin to lose, so a triad of greeks try to persuade him, but he doesn't come back until patroclus is killed. he then kills hector and the tide of the war turns.
Patroclus
"cousin" of achilles. speculated that they were lovers, but no one is certain. he decides to return to battle with achilles' armor, and is killed by hector, who steals achilles' armor.

there is a battle over patroclus' body, which the greeks eventually win.
Ajax “the Greater”
son of telamon (king of salmis). his lot is chosen in the duel with hector. he throws a boulder at hector and it hits him. hector probably would have lost the battle, but the heralds from zeus declared it a draw.

he is the best fighter after achilles.
Ajax “the Lesser”
son of oileus, also a great fighter of the greeks.
Agamemnon
king of the greeks. he is the husband of clytemnestra. he stole achilles' slavegirl and brought on the near-destruction of the greeks during the trojan war.

he had to give back chryseis, the daughter of a priest to apollo because the priest prayed that a plague hit the greeks, which it did. the greeks basically told him to give her back, so he did, but he demanded achilles' girl instead.
Menelaus
brother of agamemnon. the reason the greeks are at troy, because helen is his wife. menelaus battles paris at the beginning of the iliad for the rights to helen. he would have beaten him, but aphrodite spirits him away and saves his life.
